Water has been an essential element of the Moshannon State Forest in central Pennsylvania. So much so that the 300-square-mile forest derives its name from the Native American description of the waterway that runs through it. It was "Moss-hanne," or "moose stream." But in recent years a treasured drinking water spring and high quality trout fishing spot near a hunting camp in the forest were contaminated by a Marcellus shale gas operation. A settlement was ordered by state environmental officials last year that required drilling company EOG to pay up for its accidental discharges. The Allegheny Front's Jennifer Szweda Jordan talks with Post-Gazette reporter Don Hopey.
